Cultural Practices in Surgery

05 Aug Cultural Practices in Surgery

Cultural Practices in Surgery There are many cultural beliefs about keeping the body as a whole and or burying specific parts as a custom. These beliefs can be conflicted when undertaken in a healthcare facility.

What are your thoughts on cultural practices in surgery? Does your facility adopt cultural sensitivity and support practices? Besides the ethical and practical dilemma, the real problem is infection control and community health concerns. Should we be supporting the idea of culture and allow a woman to bury her placenta?

It would be great to hear what practices are undertaken to support indigenous culture in our healthcare systems.
